A bit about us

Clean Power Development, LLC is a New Hampshire company that focuses on the development of renewable and sustainable wood-fueled biomass-energy facilities. We are dedicated to the principles of social and environmental responsibility, and we have set out to establish projects that, by design, help solve the energy and climate challenges that confront our era.

Assessing the current energy situation

From the latest research about global climate change to fluctuating prices at local gas stations, the environmental, political, and economic impact of our nation's energy consumption is becoming evident. Not being the kind of people who like to sit back and watch things happen, a small team of experienced power generation professionals got together and formed Clean Power Development, LLC.

Clean Power Development exists to address three key issues: the need to produce environmentally and socially responsible energy; the need to lift ourselves from dependence on foreign fuels; and the desire to make local energy production enhance communities both socially and economically. These goals anchor everything we do at Clean Power Development.

Environmental Change

From CNN's Planet in Peril specials to the latest New Hampshire EPA air quality tests, it is clear we have been given an environmental situation that must change. As pollutants from old energy technologies continue to threaten our air quality and reinforce global climate change, delaying in the quest for solutions could be more dangerous than ever. We believe now is the time to reassess how we get our power and start examining the real impact it will have on our future and our children's futures. At Clean Power Development, we have set out to find practical and affective ways to power our future while preserving our ecosystem.

Energy Dependence

As demand for energy increases, rising costs pull money out of the US and deposit it overseas. Often our energy needs are linked, directly or indirectly, to countries whose interests are opposed to ours. The only lasting way to break this cycle is through energy innovation. The more locally supplied renewable energy we produce, the more completely we will be able to separate our strategic needs from our foreign policy. And that means better relations with our neighbors around the globe, greater energy-cost stability, and more of the money we spend on energy coming back to our local economy.

Economic Reality

Many creative ideas have arisen in pursuit of better energy solutions. Unfortunately, the vast majority will never leave the drawing board because they are not economically viable. It is not enough to have a brilliant new technology; it takes business leadership and a thorough understanding of the opportunities and costs of the technology to bring new ideas to life. Real sustainable energy production must be both environmentally and economically sustainable - otherwise, it will not be part of the solution.

Using trees to create sustainable energy

As New Hampshire's pulp and paper industry has faded, it has left a significant portion of the available forest resource underutilized. Paper mills, like wood-fueled biomass facilities, use low-grade fiber from trees that cannot be used as lumber or veneer logs. New Hampshire's Division of Forestry and Lands released a series of studies that estimate 37%-44% of New Hampshire's standing timber is low-grade. Our facilities take advantage of the lower grade resource, providing clean power for New England from New Hampshire's abundant supply of renewable low-grade wood.

Using trees to enhance New Hampshire's economy

The receding paper industry has also left behind an employment challenge, particularly in northern New Hampshire. By creating demand for New Hampshire's wood resources, biomass plants will help rejuvenate the logging and forestry industries. Clean Power Development's facilities operation and maintenance, combined with responsible forest harvesting operations, will create revenue that returns quickly to the local community.

To further enhance the efficiency and functionality of our facilities, we are investigating wood-pellet production alongside energy generation. This would give our facilities the ability to profitably use slightly higher-grade biomass to make wood pellets in conjunction with lower-grade biomass for electricity. The combined operation could productively use a higher portion of lower-grade material, enhancing overall harvest value while simplifying demand and logistical concerns for loggers and forest owners.

Building Biomass Energy Facilities

The following section, How We Do It, describes in greater detail how our plants will operate. Check it out to learn how we will sustainably gather fuel, how our facilities will run, what we will be doing to enhance the efficiency and productivity of our facilities, and how we can support your community.

We are currently working to develop two biomass energy facilities, one in Berlin, NH and one in Winchester, NH, with more on the way. Each plant will use the latest technologies and practices to ensure it is environmentally and economically sustainable. The Project News section will have general news items pertaining to our company as well as updates and information about specific projects.

Our website also includes two special sections, the Community Guide and the Business Solutions area. The Community Guide is designed to help community members better understand what a Clean Power Development facility could mean for their city or town. The Business Solutions section is a tool to help business leaders understand how Clean Power Development, LLC can provide environmentally and socially responsible ways to increase productivity and reduce costs.
